Software CODEC Options - XMeeting and Netmeeting

Many software programs are proprietory and will not connect to the typical codec.  A couple of programs that will work include XMeeting (mac), NetMeeting (PC), and Polycom PVX (PC).  Both XMeeting and NetMeeting are free options whicle Polycom PVX costs about $150.

XMeeting - XMeeting is a macintosh only open source program that can only initiate a point-to-point only connection but could be part of a multipoint conference.  Among features that are part of the program are multiple layout forms and the ability to record a connection.  The program can be downloaded at http://xmeeting.sourceforge.net/pages/xmeeting.php

NetMeeting - The PC based net meeting application allows you to take advantage of this popular communication program.  When calling, you need to follow these steps:

  • To start the netmeeting software, go to start, run, conf.exe
  • Next you will be asked if you want to make a shortcut on the desktop.
  • Then just put in the ip address you want to connect to and it should connect.
Polycom PVX - This PC based application is probably the most stable of the three programs.  You can download a trial copy which allows you to run a 5 minute test.  To download the free trial copy go to http://offers.polycom.com/go/polycom/pvx_trial_sw
