CODEC Connections - October 2008

Most ESU 10 schools are using a 50" LG plasma monitor while ESU 11 schools are using a Samsung 52" LCD monitor.

As we have been working with each system, we are finding that how you connect the codec and the settings on your display impact your video presentation.  Also how you make the connection impacts if you are able to record to a Pinnacle Transfer or a VCR and the quality of the presentation.

As of this date (October 29), we have come to the following conclusions:

1.  The codec came with two different video connection cables.  One is a VGA/VGA (blue cable) and the other is a VGA/Component (green, blue, red component connections/blue VGA cable).
2.  If you use the VGA/VGA cable, your monitor input selection will be RGB.  If you use the VGA/Component connection, you will choose the Component input selection.
3.  If you are going to use the recording device - pinnacle transfer or a tv with vcr - you will need to use the VGA/VGA cable instead of the VGA/Component cable.

  • If you choose to use the other cable, your recorded video will be green.
4.  The following are the codec settings for each of the video cables.  As these require administrative settings only ESU 10 can make the following changes to your codec:
VGA/VGA
VGA/Component
1.  Administrator Preferences
2.  Appearance Menu
3.  Displays Menu
4.  Display 1 Type = VGA
5.  Display 1 Resolutin = 1280X768
1.  Administrator Preferences
2.  Appearance Menu
3.  Display Menu
4.  Display 1 Type = 720P
5.  Display 1 Resolution = 1280X768

5.  The following are the video display settings for each of the current display monitors.  Each school site controls the menu items changes for their TV monitor.
LG Plasma Monitor (Use the TV remote control)
Samsung LCD Monitor (Use the TV remote control)
1.  Select "Menu" button
2.  Arrow down to the picture command
3.  Right arrow to get options.  Select the following options:
  • Select "picture mode" to standard
  • Select "aspect ration" at 16x9
  • Select the "screen" option at 1280X768.
Currently working with ESU 11 to identify the steps for setting display ratio.

6.  As mentioned, the scan converter will record good video providing that the end user connects the VGA/VGA cable.  In addition, the dip switches on the end of the scan converter must be down.  The following is a description for making the connections between the codec, monitor, scan converter, and the recording device.
Device
Explanation
Components - The components include the codec, scan converter, video display, and recording device
components:
Codec to Scan Converter - If you are planning on using a recording device you will be connecting through a scan converter.  You will use the vga/vga cable that came with the scan converter to connect from the codec vga video out to the scan converter vga video in.
vgacodec:
Scan Converter to Video Display - Using the VGA/VGA blue cable, you will connect to the video out on the scan converter to video in on the monitor.  Since you will be using the VGA/VGA cable, the input on your monitor will be RGB.
vgavga:
Scan Converter to Pinnacle Video Transfer or VCR - You can use s-video or yellow composite video cable to connect from the scan converter to the recording device.
scanconvert:
Pinnacle Transfer Settings - The dip switches on the power end of the device must be down.
dipswitch:
Audio Connection for Recording from Video Display (tv) to Pinnacle Transfer  - Using red/white audio cables, go from tv audio out to pinnacle transfer.
