Sculpting A Vessel

The activity for this lesson follows the theme of "cycles". First a persuasive writing assignment will begin this activity and students will stamp the clay surface for content rich texture. Second, student's may sculpt the clay form into a figure, vase, or basket.

Both Sue and I would like to thank you for following along on the five-day NAEA tour. From a blogging and podcasting point of view, it was a great experience as we got a chance to test out a new remote learning resource. Hope you enjoyed the presentation methods.

The closing podcast includes some comments from Sue about her week in Chicago as well as two teachers who attended our workshop presentation.

Although you did not get the opportunity to attend the national conference this year, I hope you definitely mark on your calendar to attend the Nebraska State Art Educators conference which will be held on October 6 & 7 at Hastings College campus.

I'm sure that many of the Nebraska presenters at the national conference will be presenting their session as well as sharing some ideas gained from the Chicago conference.

Both Sue and I would welcome any comments you might have in regards to the Storming Chicago blog and podcasts.

Back Design - Friday, March 24

Here might be a lesson to share with your students. While walking Michigan Avenue today, I came across a really different way of advertising - body advertising.

Office Max was doing a campaign entitled Save Money On Ink. The purpose was to advertise that Office Max can refill your ink cartridges for your printer.

To gather attention to this campaign, four artists were selected to do body art about decades of Chicago. Ten models shared their backs and the artists works to the public.

Below you will see pictures of the body art. Also I was able to visit with all four artists and you can hear that 5 minute discussion about how they got involved in the project and their experience in body art.

Storming Chicago - Thursday, March 23

This is my first day here in Chicago and I had a very enjoyable start to the NAEA conference.

I did spend much of the afternoon in the exhibit area. I attend a lot of conferences and it seems that the national art conference has more give aways then any conference I go to. Now I'm not much of an artist so I'll either have to start finding ways to use those sharpie pens and the crayons or find someone who can.

Below you will see a few pictures at the exhibit area.

While in the exhibit area, I was able to get three exhibitors to talk with me for my podcast about resources, web storage services, and software they were promoting. Listen to the podcast to learn more about these products.

All three looked like great resources and I would be willing to share more about the programs if you have questions.

Finally I attended two sessions in the afternoon. The first was entitled 'Art Cafe - a 3D Environment for Art'. This program which creates an art gallery based around gaming like animation was designed by the art department of Indiana University. I signed up as a trail participant so will let you know more about this after I have had a chance to look my way around the art cafe.

My last session stop of the day was a presentation by the Art Institute of Chicago. Excellent session as they shared about their online resources which included many video clips connected with sound lesson plans. Even had lesson plans for docents. The web link for this program was http://www.artic.edu I really think this site could be a great resource for the classroom.

Tomorrow Sue and I will be presenting our session on Whoop It Up At MONA. We will also be conducting several interviews with presenters and NAEA participants - particularily those from Nebraska.

Storming Out of Nebraska to Chicago With Sue - Wed. March 22

You guessed it, my Monday morning flight turned into a Tuesday evening trip with arrival at around 9 pm. Needless to say I missed the museum tour on Tuesday.

Weather Report - The "windy city" isn't so windy today with temperatures in the 40 and no snow. It isn't Palm Beach but I think it beats Nebraska's weather.

I will be attending several opening sessions today. A couple of the sessions will be presentations by Nebraskans. I will report more about this on the next message.

I do intend to visit the Chicago Institute of Art and seek to gather some educational resources for you.

Check back on Thursday night or Friday morning as I will be reporting back. Also I believe John is planning to do a podcast of his trip from Nebraska and his first day activities at NAEA.
