Distance Learning Upgrade Specifications
As a result of state legislation (LB 1208), schools served by ESU 10 for distance learning are looking to upgrade/improve their distance education technology and networks. The statewide timeline for upgrading these schools is the summer of 2008. Schools may elect to postpone this upgrade for up to four years. To see a list of schools that are interested in upgrading IP and/or distance education technology, click here.
As part of the upgrade, the TVDEC North and STEPS schools (see school list) will be looking to upgrade their existing static classroom to an IP based system. As part of the conversion, they will be looking at meeting these objectives:
1. Conversion will include a High Definition (HD) unit with content sharing, multi-point connection capability and ability to connect two cameras. ( see codec specs) 2. The conversion will consist of one of two options: - Use the existing distance education teaching station.
- Replace the existing distance educaiton teaching station with a portable teaching station solution.
3. As part of either option, the conversion will use as much of the existing components that are currently part of the existing static classroom. - Gentner AP800
- Extron Video Switch (STEPS) or
- Biamp Audio System
- Shure Mic System
- VCR
- Sony Document Camera
4. Other requirements for upgrade: - Touch switching capability that allows for easy navigation (i.e. AMX or Crestron)
- Video display change over from existing four monitors to a LCD/Plasma or Projector solution.
- Ceiling or portable mic system (Optional)
5. Other considerations that will be part of long term planning include: - A streaming management solution that will allow for real time and archival capabilities.
- As ESU 10 supports the technology, we would like the ability to remotely manage the installed solutions.
- As some CODECS may be PTP devices, we want to consider bridging options which will support HD.
- Integration of this technology into our existing systems is also something we would like you to consider.
Portable Cart: All sites will also be considering portable viewing station solutions. The following considerations would be part of the portable viewing station:
1. A HD system with content sharing and options of multi-point or point to point capability. 2. A video display option of either an LCD/Plasma or projector system. 3. A portable cart capable to support video display option selected. 4. Remote control device will control component switching. 5. Audio will be controlled through the codec.
Warranty/Support/Maintenance: As part of the management phase, ESU 10 will be the first point of contact for supporting our schools systems. As part of any proposal, outline initial and ongoing support costs for upgrades and troubleshooting support that might be required.
Timeline:
- Bid requests - As several of the schools could be eligible for internal connections through USF erate program, all codec bids must be provided to ESU 10 or participating schools by January 10, 2008 with approval of notice to contract before February 7, 2008.
- The purchase of equipment and/or services can take place anytime after a school elects to submit a purchase order for said equipment/services.
- Schools that are eligible for erate discounts for internal connections will not purchase any CODECS prior to July 1, 2008.
- Schools that are not eligible will look to purchase equipment and services prior to July 1, 2008.
- Contract responsibility - Each school that elects to participate will be the contracting entity for equipment and services requested.
